30-day Window for Town of Blacksburg Launches School Zone Speed Safety Program In Effect
The Town of Blacksburg is installing automated speed cameras in two school zones — Gilbert Linkous Elementary (Toms Creek Road) and Blacksburg Middle School (Prices Fork Road). Drivers going 11+ mph over the posted limit will get a warning notice starting August 10, then a $100 civil citation starting September 9, 2026. The ordinance was adopted in 2024; signs are already posted in both zones.

Renew the New is a community-driven initiative right here in the New River Valley dedicated to keeping the New River clean and healthy. Run through Giles County Administration in partnership with the New River Valley Regional Commission, they organize volunteer river clean-ups throughout the year and they want help!
Their Biggest Event: Fall Into the New
The flagship clean-up event sends volunteers out along the New River corridor from Ripplemead to Camp Success to haul out trash, tires, and debris. Can't make it in person? They also offer a virtual clean-up option so you can pitch in on your own schedule!
